Do you dream of knitting one of the beautiful yoke sweaters so prominent on Ravelry these days but feel a little daunted by the colorwork? Knitting a hat is a great way to both test colors and swatch for in the round sweaters! Join us for a dip into colorwork with the Cartography Hat by Tin Can Knits. This hat pattern is found in their great new book Strange Brew or as a stand alone pattern on Ravelry. You can swatch for a sweater while knitting a holiday gift! Some of what we will cover in class...
Color choice tips
Carrying and trapping floats
Quick review of reading & tracking a chart Weaving in ends so there are no holes
Duplicate stitch to the rescue...mistakes happen A few tips on blocking
There are two 2-hour sessions for this class. During the first session we will cover tips on doing colorwork and practice those skils. We will work on our hats.
The second session will be structured as a knit-a-long for students who would like support as they continue knitting their hats. Also at that time students are welcome to bring a pattern of thie choice to discuss how to use that pattern's colorwork chart for a swatch hat. We will discuss gauge and how to use the information a swatch provides (everyone‘ s favorite subject!) to choose a size.
THINGS TO KNOW
Prerequisite: basic knitting skills, knitting in the round
Yarn: 2 colors of DK weight yarn (amount depends on the size hat you are making). Colors that have good value (light/dark) contrast show best in stranded colorwork.
Pattern: available as a single pattern on Ravelry or purchase the Strange Brew Book from Yarn Culture
Needles: US size 4 and 6 (or size for to achieve gauge). Few notes on needle choice: 1) Often with colorwork knitters need to go up a size needle to achieve gauge. 2) Either 32 or 40 inch needle for modified magic loop or 16 inch circulars are easier with colorwork hats. 3) Often with dpns stitches fall off the needles while spreading out the stitches to keep floats long enough. Dpns are great for the crown when the number of stitches are decreased. 4) Bring an extra needle to use for our practice piece...a size 5, 6, or 7 will do for this practice piece. I will be providing a random selection of yarn to play with during practice.
